Our Rating

I had a business lunch and the person I was meeting suggested 3 South Place Bar & Grill at the South Place Hotel. I asked some friends and no one had heard of it but I checked the website and it looked good and the menu sounded very yummy.

The hotel has two restaurants, a casual one on the ground floor and a fancier one on the roof (which is supposed to be very good). We met downstairs and as I arrived early, I wondered around and checked out the lobby and some funky fun details around it (like the wall of wire shoes below).

What we ate:

Crab tortellini, curry oil, green apple, coriander salad: he had tried this dish previously and loved it so he suggested we share one as a starter. It was indeed delicious and very light. When you read curry oil, heavy comes to mind but it was just a touch and the green apple and coriander salad made the dish feel very light and in a way, more spring like versus winter.

Roasted Cornish cod, roast peppers, Yorkshire chorizo, white beans and oregano: this was a gorgeous winter dish with the beans and chorizo. The beans were al-dente and the fish was a gorgeous piece of tall white and flaky cod, yum!

Grilled cod with steamed spinach: also had the same cod but just grilled and served with spinach and once again, extremely tasty. Even if this was the healthiest twin dish, it was absolutely delicious and I almost didn’t miss the beans and chorizo.

Sticky banana cake, banana ice cream, caramelized peanuts: I am a total sucker for sticky toffee cake and this was an elevated version as it had banana in the cake and the ice cream was also banana flavor, but in a very subtle and smart way. The caramelized peanuts also made it even more interesting and added a nice crunchy texture. Was soooooo good!

In sum: perfect business lunch spot but also great restaurant if you happen to be in that area (which I never am). I would like to try the restaurant upstairs too as he said it was fantastic, but fancier and better for dinners.
