I am definitely the worst food blogger on earth. I haven’t written a post in 4 months. To be fair, I took a job in a London late February and have been traveling so much I haven’t been able to catch a breath. Believe it or not the blog is not my full time job and sadly doesn’t pay any bills…….But my recent meal at Hip Hot in LA deserves a post!
My friend Oli has been telling me to stop complaining about food in LA and head east. We live in West LA and food is a bit flat but the traffic is so vile we get very lazy taking Ubers all the way east. To be fair other friends (Guy, HJ, Jet) have been also saying that so shame on us! Oli organized a dinner on a Sunday, which meant no traffic. We even rented a car for the weekend (we have been living in LA for 1.5 years without a car, nuts). It took us 30 minutes to get to the tastiest Szechwan food. Damn why didn’t we do this before????
Chef Tien at Hip Hot was in charge and just sent us food. I was afraid of the level of spiciness but she probably adjusted to a medium heat as there were nine of us and probably not all as tolerant to ultra Szechwan level heat. The entire dinner was absolutely fantastic and hard to pick favorites but these were the must eats:
Chicken in chilies with peanuts. Tender chicken and chilies with nice peanuts for crunch.
The meal was truly amazing and I can’t wait for the opening of their hot pot place in Swatelle as it’s much closer to our place. But I definitely would drive longer than 30 minutes to have her food again.
Other dishes we loved:
In sum: delicious food worth the drive from wherever you come from. Also, the place has very cute details like the Chef’s toys placed underneath the glass tables.
And their signature dish is the spicy giant crab the chef wanted us to try other dishes but I must must come back for the crab.
