I had heard from several people how delicious Monteverde was and I decided to take my mom there on the night we had in Chicago alone – we were there for Thanksgiving with Stewart’s family and escaped for a girl’s night out.
My friend Javier, owner of the amazing Alter, helped us get a table as reservations are not easy to come by.
What we ate:
The table next to ours was having a massive plate of pasta with meat insanity so I took a picture of it and said: “check what we are having for dinner” wondering if he believed us….or knew better that we would rather share and try many things instead……he knew better!
Toast with sunchockes, artichokes, ricotta and truffles. Tasty but the truffle flavor was too subtle. Not a must order.
Stuffed cabbage with mushroom bolognese, crispy polenta and optional fried egg (we of course opted in): One of the best dishes I’ve tried in a while. Original and interesting, comforting and addictive.
Pasta of the day: Tagliatelle with chanterelle mushrooms, country ham, horseradish and piava cheese–You could see and taste that the pasta was fresh and it was cooked to perfection. We could have used a lot more mushrooms though.
Brownie sundae affogato: tasty brownie nibbles served with chocolate and hazelnut ice cream with coffee poured on top. I think vanilla or caramel would have been better with the coffee instead of chocolate ice cream. It was absolutely delicious.
In sum: I almost brought Stewart back two days later as I felt like he missed out. Delicious Italian food in a casual fun environment. I would definitely go back.
