Pauly Saal Berlin: Review

Our Rating

I was told by a dear friend who is the editor of a magazine in the city I used to live that Pauly Saal was the best meal she had during her Berlin visit. This of course made me cancel all the other plans and create a double booking for dinner so I could agonize and suffer with indecisiveness…

The concierge decided, I agree with your friend and it is my favorite restaurant.

High expectations much?

After our massive wurst lunch (read the other post), and not really hungry, we still made it to dinner. The place is an old girl’s school quarters, with a very unique and cool vibe. The dining room is nice, with some cool art, but not something you haven’t seen before. But within the setting, and next to their bar, which is sort of retro fun cool (hard to envision I realize), it works.

I couldn’t decide on cocktails and skipped to wine, Stewart ordered the rosemary concoction which was amazing.

What we ate:

Starter:

Since not hungry we shared the pork belly with snails. Tasty snails, pork could have used a nice brown sear or a touch more flavor

Mains:

Plaice with mushrooms and veggies

Veal with sunschoke puree and other tasty bites….

Good, but I think our expectations were too high and we should have followed our noses and ordered the fantastically smelling grilled ok…..or the grilled mains. Oh well. Next time

Dessert: Had failed so far in berlin so kept trying, the molten chocolate and caramel cake (I know, molten cake, cliche…but this had caramel..) was good. But I won’t be craving it for every day forward.

In sum; Service was amazing, great manager and staff. Was it our best Berlin meal? Nah…….wurst and Vietnamese win.
